False Ceiling: The Modern Interior Decoration Element

False ceiling is gaining popularity as a part of a home or any other building interior decoration art. It is the ceiling under the main roof; that is why it is called as false ceiling. False ceiling is also known as Drop ceiling or Suspended ceiling. The area between the main ceiling and false ceiling is used for wiring and piping, and that space is called plenum space.

Gypsum board is use as a material for manufacturing of false ceiling, which is light-weight, flexible, fire resistant and economical to use. Another material is Metal ceiling panels that is used for wiring and ducts (tubes), and is easy to install, access and maintain. Moreover, the Fiber or mineral reinforced materials, such as tiles and fiberboards, are used in false ceiling for insulation against sound and fire. Along with that, Plaster of Paris and Plywood sheets are also used for enhancing the visual appeal of suspended ceiling.

Benefits of False Ceiling:

Sound proofing: Concrete places, laundry rooms, TV lounges are the places that produce loud and sometimes irritating sounds. Also, in office places, the business people are afraid of leaking of secret matters because of the voice going out of the discussion room. The solution to this is the drop ceiling that protects the echo of sound due to its fibrous make-up. This type of ceiling has the wonderful acoustical absorbing ability that suck up the noise.

Cover-ups: Though false ceiling is used with the intention to cover the wires, pipes and duct-work, you can still have the access to these wires by just lifting up a panel. This would help you in replacing a wire, for example, any damage to it occurs.

Levelling: The metal grids used for suspended ceilings can be installed and adjusted according to your desired height. So if there is uneven ceiling in your home then only a little working is required for it; that is to install suspended ceiling.

Protection: Along with acoustical absorption, drop ceiling has the ability to resist the fire. In addition, if this ceiling somehow becomes damaged by water then you can easily replace it.

Insulation: As your ceiling would have a hollow space between main ceiling and drop ceiling itself, it is necessary to install additional insulation (filling) overhead. Foam can be used for insulation purpose, whereas one can install additional panels for more noise absorption.

Ease of modification: Dropped ceiling has easily removed ceiling panels, which simplify the access to plenum for repairing or alterations.

Although false ceiling has become a modern design element of architecture now, it was initially developed to reduce audio problems. The new design and technology has increased the sound deadening quality of dropped ceilings.
